Technical data
After imaging Omega Centauri with the Seestar S30 Pro under the skies of Kagga Kamma (https://sl1nk.com/9y7112b), I wanted to revisit its core using a much longer focal length: a Meade 12" F/8 with focal reducer (≈1950 mm) from Telescope Network under the pristine skies of Atacama, Chile. In recent years, Omega Centauri has become the focus of renewed scientific interest. In 2024, Hubble measurements of the motions of more than one million stars provided the strongest evidence yet for an intermediate-mass black hole at the cluster's center. More recently, in July 2026, the oMEGACat project combined over 20 years of Hubble observations with James Webb Space Telescope data to identify the first confirmed stellar-mass black hole in the cluster, named oMEGACat BH-2. The results were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. My next step is to determine exactly where this system is located within the cluster and see whether its position can be identified by comparing the scientific data with high-resolution amateur images.
