Technical data
NGC 6888, known as the Crescent Nebula, is a nebula located in the constellation Cygnus, at a distance of about 5,000 light-years from Earth. Contrary to what is often thought, it is not a supernova remnant, but an emission nebula formed by the stellar winds of a massive Wolf-Rayet star, WR 136. The structure results from the interaction between slower stellar winds emitted in an earlier phase and much faster winds emitted in the current phase.
