NGC 2736, better known as the Pencil Nebula, is located in the constellation Vela and is part of the much larger Vela Supernova Remnant, produced by a supernova explosion that occurred roughly 11,000 years ago. The processing of this image was focused mainly on revealing the extremely fine OIII filaments. These structures trace shock fronts where the expanding supernova remnant interacts with the surrounding interstellar medium: the shock heats and ionizes the gas, producing the characteristic emission from doubly ionized oxygen. This is what gives the Pencil Nebula its remarkable network of thin, sharp filaments.
