Technical data
NGC 2264 is an astronomical complex comprising a very young open star cluster and an emission nebula, located in the constellation Monoceros. The triangular arrangement of its brightest stars resembles the shape of a Christmas tree, hence its popular name. The cluster has an estimated age of about 1-5 million years, making it an extremely young star-forming region on a cosmic scale. The most massive O and B-type stars ionize the surrounding gas, producing visible H-alpha emission. The complex also includes the famous Cone Nebula, a pillar of gas and dust shaped by stellar radiation, and the Fox Fur Nebula, a reflection region characterized by filamentous and irregular structures. NGC 2264 represents a natural laboratory for the study of stellar feedback and the early evolution of open clusters.
