Technical data
This image shows M 106 (NGC 4258), a bright intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici, located about 23 million light-years from Earth. Although it is an evolved galaxy, M 106 remains highly active. Its spiral arms host numerous star-forming regions, highlighted in this HaLRGB composition through H-alpha emission from ionized hydrogen. Its nucleus contains an active supermassive black hole, and the galaxy exhibits the so-called "anomalous arms".
