Technical data
M101 is a spiral galaxy observed almost "face-on" in the constellation Ursa Major, about 21 million light-years away. It is one of those galaxies that seem "easy", but in reality they are not: it has a very low surface brightness and a very extensive structure, so the signal is always delicate to pull out, especially under non-perfect skies. In the arms, several regions of star formation can be distinguished, while the innermost areas show more mature stellar populations.
